Information released last week by the Virginia Department of Taxation states that with the change in the law lowering the tax on July 1, a family of four with an annual income of $60,000 stands to save $83 a year if their weekly grocery bill averages just over $100.
Frazier also noted that an upswing in food sold for home consumption could offset some declining sales in cigarettes brought on by an increase in the tax per pack and carton instituted by Virginia lawmakers two years ago.
The state went from having one of the lowest cigarette taxes, 2.5 cents per pack, to the current 20 cent-per-pack price. That will increase to 30 cents on Friday.
